Kazimierz Nowak kommt am 11. Januar 1897 in Stryj in der Region Podole in Ostpolen zur Welt. Nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg zieht er um nach Posen und nimmt eine Stelle bei einer Versicherungsgesellschaft an. Gleichzeitig versucht er seinen Leidenschaften -dem Reisen und dem Fotografieren- so viel Zeit wie möglich zu widmen und unternimmt zahlreiche Fahrradreisen durch seine Heimat. Am 19. März 1922 heiratet Nowak seine Lebensgefährtin Maria Gorcik. Kurz danach kommt ihre Tochter Elzbieta zur Welt und im Januar 1925 das zweite Kind, der Sohn Romuald.
In der Zeit der Krise, im März 1925 entscheidet sich Nowak sein Heimatland zu verlassen, um als Pressekorrespondent und Fotograf seiner Familie den Lebensunterhalt zu sichern. Er unternimmt zwei Reisen durch Europa. Er überquert dabei Ungarn, Österreich, Italien, Belgien, Holland, Rumänien, Griechenland und die Türkei auf seinem Fahrrad. Im Jahr 1928 erreicht er das vom Krieg ergriffene Tripolitanien in Nordafrika. Kurz danach zwingen Nowak gesundheitliche und finanzielle Probleme zur Rückkehr nach Polen. Er entschließt sich allerdings in nächster Zukunft den gesamten afrikanischen Kontinent, vom Norden bis zum Süden, auf dem Sessel eines Fahrrads zu überqueren. Er reist viel durch Polen, macht eine Tour nach Frankreich und bereitet sich gleichzeitig auf die große Expedition nach Afrika vor.
Kazimierz Nowak tritt seine Reise am 4. November 1931 an: zuerst fährt er mit dem Zug nach Rom, anschließend mit dem Fahrrad nach Neapel und weiter mit dem Schiff über das Mittelmeer. Am 26. November erreicht er zum zweiten mal den schwarzen Kontinent. In Tripolis entscheidet er sich, auf seinem 7 Jahre alten Fahrrad, die Richtung nach Süden, zum dutzende tausend Kilometer entfernten Nadelkap, einzuschlagen. Als er am Karsamstag im Jahr 1932 die Oase Maradah erreicht, löst er Panik unter dem Zonenpräsidium aus. Niemand kann begreifen wie ein einsamer Fahrradfahrer aus Polen die offene Wüste erreicht hat. Die italienische Behörde befiehlt Nowak, aufgrund der Unruhen in Zyrenaika, seinen Pfad zu ändern und sich durch Benghasi in Richtung Alexandrien in Ägypten zu begeben. Dort entscheidet sich Nowak weiter nach Süden zu fahren. Am Nil entlang, durch die Route der Großen Afrikanischen Seen bewegt er sich immer weiter in die Tiefe des unerforschten, geheimnisvollen und sehr belebten Kontinents. Dorthin erreichen ihn nur selten die Berichte aus weiter Ferne über die welterschütternden Ereignisse – die Große Krise und die Politik der Faschisten in Europa – die jedoch, angesichts der kontinentübergreifenden Epidemien oder über den Himmel verrückenden, feindseligen Wolken der Wanderhausschrecken, völlig irreal und irrelevant erscheinen. Nowak reist alleine, besucht jedoch gelegentlich einheimische Dörfer um Nahrung zu besorgen und afrikanische Legenden zu hören. Er lernt viele exotische Mitbewohner des Kontinents kennen, wie die Tuareg, die ägyptischen Fellache, das Schilluk-Volk aus den Sümpfen, die Pygmäen, die Buren aus Transvaal, das stolze Watussi-Volk, die Hottentot, die Buschmänner, die Liliputaner Babinga, die wilden Abasalampasu, das Hausa-Volk und viele andere, die alle etwas gemeinsam haben – sie müssen alle hart um das Überleben in dem von der Natur dominierten Kontinent kämpfen. Als Nowak seine Reise fortsetzt, trägt der Ton der afrikanischen Trommeln die unglaubliche Neuigkeit über den gesamten Kontinent hinweg, dass ein einsamer Europäer auf seinem seltsamen Transportmittel das afrikanische Land durchreist.
Nur unter den gelegentlich getroffenen Landsleuten und in den Missionszentren findet Kazimierz Nowak Freundlichkeit und Zuversicht. Betritt er aber die Siedlungen der weißen Afrikaexploratoren, so scheint das Gefühl der Einsamkeit in ihm zu wachsen. Er bemerkt dadurch, wie stark sich seine Prinzipien und seine Philosophie von denen der Beamten, der Militärdienste, der Jäger und Forscher, die nur zur Suche nach Gewinn, Karriere oder Trophäen nach Afrika kommen, unterscheiden. Wegen seines starken Gerechtigkeitsempfindens und seiner respektvollen Betrachtungsweise beurteilt er die imperialen Gewohnheiten der Europäer in Afrika auf eine für diese Periode außergewöhnlich kritische, unabhängige und mutige Art und Weise. Deshalb hat er es gar nicht eilig das nächste Dorf zu erreichen, auch wenn er schon den Feuerschein der nächsten Siedlung am Himmel sehen kann. Er hält sich lieber noch eine Nacht zurück, schlägt sein Lager auf und verbringt die Zeit inmitten der von der Zivilisation unversehrten, afrikanischen Natur.
Trotz aller Hoffnungen der Kolonial- und Meeresliga in Polen teilt Kazimierz Nowak die Kolonialambitionen des polnischen Staates nicht. Wahrscheinlich ist das der Grund, warum er aus dem Heimatland kaum materielle Hilfe bekommt. Ab und zu erhält er lediglich neue Fahrradreifen von dem Stahl- und Gummiwarenhersteller – der Firma Stomil aus Posen. Die benötigten Finanzmittel für seine Reise, sowie für den Unterhalt seiner Familie, erwirbt er mit den Reportagen und Fotos, die er an polnische und deutsche Zeitschriften schickt. Die in dem Fotolabor von Kazimierz Greger in Posen gekaufte Contax Kleinbildkamera, die er allerdings erst in Afrika zugeschickt bekommt, erlaubt ihm während der gesamten Reise über 10 000 Fotos zu machen. Seine Tour wird auch von der lokalen, afrikanischen Presse beschrieben. Im April 1934 erreicht Nowak den südlichsten Punkt des afrikanischen Kontinents – das Nadelkap.
In Kapstadt entscheidet sich Kazimierz Nowak dazu, einen neuen, unbekannten Weg zurück Richtung Heimat zu nehmen – wieder ganz allein durch den ganzen afrikanischen Kontinent.
Trotz schwerer Malariaanfälle und ständigem Geldmangel macht er sich sofort auf den Weg. Mitten in der Wüste in Südwest-Afrika fällt sein Fahrrad auseinander. Daraufhin bekommt Kazimierz Nowak, von dem in Gumuchab wohnhaften Polen Mieczyslaw Wisniewski, ein Pferd mit dem Namen Rys und kauft ein zweites, das er Zbik nennt. Rys wird zu seinem Ross und Zbik tauscht er ein paar Tage später gegen Cowboy ein, das nun als sein Gepäckpferd dient. Die nächsten 3000 Kilometer durchreist er im Sattel seines Pferdes. Erst als er sich auf der Farm des Grafen Zamoyski in Angola aufhält, verabschiedet sich Nowak von seinen vierbeinigen Begleitern.
Nachdem Nowak den Kassaifluss erreicht, entschließt er sich vom Radfahrer und Reiter zum Seefahrer zu werden. In dem auf Bestellung gefertigten, einheimischen Kahn, den er „Poznan I” tauft, schwimmt er den unruhigen, launischen Fluss entlang. Kurz danach verliert er jedoch sein neues Transportmittel durch einen Unfall im Katarakt Kaveve und wird gezwungen seine Reise zu Fuß fortzusetzen. Nach einigen hundert Kilometern erreicht er Lulua. Dort kauft er ein neues Boot, passt es an seine eigenen Bedürfnisse an und benennt es nach seiner Frau, „Marys”. Im September des Jahres 1935 beendet er in Leopoldville (jetzt Kinshasa in der Demokratischen Republik Kongo) eine zweimonatige Periode alleiniger Bootsfahrt über die Flüsse Lulua, Kassai und Kongo. Die nächste Etappe bis zum See Tschad legt er wieder auf einem Fahrrad zurück. Die Behörden im französischen Äquatorialafrika wollen Kazimierz Nowak nicht alleine über die Sahara fahren lassen und empfehlen ihm die Reise in Begleitung einer Karawane fortzusetzen, die die Mitnahme einer entsprechenden Wasserreserve ermöglichen würde. Nowak kauft einen Dromedar, stellt einen Antreiber ein und formt eine eigene Karawane. Die nächsten fünf Monate verbringt er auf dem schaukelndem Rücken des Dromedars Ueli und erreicht so Uargla. Dort steigt er wieder auf das Fahrrad und durchreist so die letzten 1000 Kilometer von Uargla nach Algier am Mittelmeer.
Im November 1936 beendet Nowak eine über 40 000 Kilometer lange Reise. Für das letzte Geld kauft er Kleidung (es ist Herbst in Europa) und ein Ticket für die Fähre nach Marseille. Anschließend fährt er weiter nach Beaulieu bei St. Etienne, wo er zwei Wochen in der polnischen Bergbaukolonie (die er schon früher, während einer Reise durch Europa besucht hatte) verbringt. Er verkauft die in Afrika gemachten Bilder sowie die Fotos der Bergarbeiter und versucht damit Geld für ein Zugticket nach Polen zusammenzubekommen. Allerdings scheitert er und wird gezwungen auch die letzte Etappe seiner Reise Richtung Heimat mit dem Fahrrad zurückzulegen. Dafür muss er nach Paris fahren um sich die Visen für den Transit durch Belgien und Deutschland zu besorgen. Dank der Hilfe seiner Frau und einer Bürgschaft der Firma Stomil bekommt er vom polnischen Konsulat ein Darlehen in Höhe von 750 Franken.
In der Nacht vom 22. auf den 23. Dezember 1936 überquert Nowak die deutsch-polnische Grenze in Bentschen. In Posen erkennt er im Halbdunkel des Bahnsteigs, unter den am Gleis stehenden und aus dem Zug aussteigenden Leuten, eine Gruppe der ungeduldig wartenden Verwandten.
Nachdem Kazimierz Nowak nach Posen zurückkommt, hält er im Apollo-Kino Vorträge über die Ethnografie des afrikanischen Landes mit erläuternden Dias von seiner unglaublichen Reise. Mit seinen Vorträgen besucht er auch zahlreiche andere Städte in Polen, u.a. wird er an der Jagielonski Universität in Krakau und an der Handelshochschule in Warschau empfangen. Er plant all seine Reisematerialien in Form eines Buches herauszugeben und hat eine neue Expedition vor, diesmal nach Indien und Süd-Ost-Asien. Leider schafft er es nicht mehr diese Wünsche zur realisieren. Durch die Malariarückfälle geschwächt holt er sich noch eine Knochenhautentzündung und muss sich einer Operation unterziehen. Während seines Aufenthaltes im Krankenhaus zieht er sich noch zusätzlich eine Lungenentzündung zu. Nicht ganz ein Jahr nach seiner Rückkehr ins Heimatland, verstirbt Kazimierz Nowak am 13. Oktober des Jahres 1937.
